DIGICERT ACQUISITION COMPLETE

Symantec Powered by DigiCert

Symantec is now Powered by DigiCert

Exciting news in the SSL industry as two titans have joined forces to create, hands-down, the world's most powerful Certificate Authority. Starting December 1, 2017, all Symantec validation will be handled by DigiCert - the industry leader in Validation - as Symantec transitions to a new, stronger PKI.

In the meantime, you may be asked to re-issue your Symantec SSL certificate. But trust us, the payoff will be worth it!

If you are a current Symantec customer (this includes RapidSSL, GeoTrust and Thawte customers, too) you may need to re-issue your SSL certificate.

What are the Benefits of Symantec and DigiCert's Partnership?

In the interim, the immediate advantage of Symantec's partnership with DigiCert is the continued trusted status of its SSL certificates. Your certificate will continue to work as intended (Extended Validation included) as long as you re-issue within the given timeframe.

In the long term? DigiCert has already revamped its partner program, inviting high-value Symantec partners (like The SSL Store) to the ultra-exclusive Platinum Elite tier of the DigiCert Certified Partner Program. That means existing Symantec customers will enjoy all the same strong security features they always have, but with the added benefit of DigiCert's best-in-industry validation practices and universally trusted PKI. No more waiting for days for your certificates to be issued–now it will take just minutes.

New Enterprise Business Options

DigiCert is world renowned for its Enterprise Security offerings. While Symantec certainly exceled in that space, too, combining the companies' knowledge and experience will make for a stronger Enterprise program built for scale and performance, with more product offerings and a smarter PKI. Look for a range of new digital certificates, including for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the near future.

How Did We Get Here?

You may have seen a few news stories about Symantec's agreement with Google recently. Basically, Google has asked Symantec to rebuild its PKI. To do this, Symantec enlisted the help of DigiCert - it sold its CA business and all associated assets to DigiCert for $950-million and a 30% ownership stake - and will be relying heavily on DigiCert to handle its validation and issuance as it works towards that goal.

In other words Symantec took life's lemons and made us all lemonade.
